Actually the e8400 beats the Q6600 on almost every test accept video and audio encoding/decoding. Programs just aren't ready yet for quad core computing... and softwares are not even fully taking advantage of dual cores until recently.
Dual core will be plenty for the next 1-2 years. A quad core will probably be better suited for years and years down the road. E8400 = Shorter Term. Q6600 = Longer Term. Your choice.but my personal openion is to go for e8400(price and performence)wise and for gaming cause
q-How much of a difference will you see on the E8400 vs a quad?
a-You'll see a large difference when encoding videos.thast all
and here is a cpu comparison chart

Re: Help me to buy a good processor for Gaming

No much of a gamer of PC guru like you folks so I never bothred to see the test results before.. Thanks Soul Man, I used to think that quad core beats dual but as for the time since programs are not made for Quad core so Dual core gets more juice.... Thanks

So our bottom line is either E8400 = Shorter Term or Q6600 = Longer Term ... I reckon GTA 4 Reccomended Quad CoreCUP or something... So I rather go with the Quad Core Option (Longer Term and Games)...

Re: Help me to buy a good processor for Gaming

If need to work on a 1-2 power hungry application(games or photoshop or CAD or 3D animation) then your best bet is E8400(Dual core Penryn). But if need to juggle between 7-8 medium powered application, then go for the Q6600(Quad core Conroe).
But my personal recommendation would be- ditch both and find a Q8200 or Q8400(Quad core Penryn)

Penryn is the code name for seconf generation Core 2 Duo processor. They have smaller core, lower power consumption and SSE 4.1 instruction set. An all around winner over Conroe chips. A bit pricier though!!

Re: Help me to buy a good processor for Gaming

i wud advise u 2 go for q8200 or q8xxx higher series.......as milky said...its got new sse4.1 instruction set n also consumes less power than older versions.......its got quite nice overclocking headroom, provided that u'll overclock......considering all these....it sud easily outpace e8400........basically at 1024 or 1280 res, there's not much of a difference on fps...so you won't see any significant difference on game play with a quad-core or a dual-core.....future games wud be quad-core friendly.....u wud b better off with a quad-core....
