Tourism in Kerala is an industry that has much importance and it is a ‘tool’ for rapid economic development in the developing countries. The importance of tourism as a contributor to economic growth is so widely accepted that year after year throughout the world massive investments continue to pour in for its development. Notably, while planning for development of the tourism industry, sufficient attention should be given to the important economic criteria viz., efficiency of capital utilization, labor intensity and the time span involved in the gestation period of the investment.

It is generally observed that the gestation period is comparatively shorter and the margin of profit certainly greater in the tourism industry than in most other industries. Moreover, tourism calls for comparatively moderate investment compared to other industries. A country’s tourism consists of what is already part of the country, its climate, scenery, history, monuments, art, tradition, festivals and people. The tourist who spends much of his saved income seeks little more than a pleasant change to a newer environment for a holiday. What he takes back with him are just impressions and souvenirs.

To spend holidays Kerala offers much for tourists from any part of the world. Tourists are attracted mainly due to its unique climate. This small stretch of land offers a mind-boggling range of diversities unseen elsewhere. Adjacent to the low lands lies the famous beach resorts and the backwaters. The backwaters have now emerged as a focal point of backwater tourism. Hundreds of houseboats of different sizes now offer world class facilities at local costs. Some of the house boats even offer rejuvenation packages inside the houseboat itself.

While in earlier years only the season time from October to March was full of tourists, with the advent of the monsoon tourism packages, Kerala is emerging as a round the year tourism destination. It is a rare achievement for a small state in the Indian union. While other states have much to offer in terms of cultural artifacts and other monuments, the main selling point for Kerala is its unique climate and the diversities in flora and fauna.
