Physics thing was first created by Silicon Graphic Inc. at 1992 which was named Open GL used on AutoCad...Then at 2001 a swiss company NovodeX,Russel smith's ODE,Erwin Coumans's Bullet PhysX Lib & at 2003 Havoc invented...
Russel smith's ODE(Open Dynamic Engine)Physics used in games like Call of Juarez, Blood Rayne 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R etc...Now the engine is a bit out dated...
NovodeX renamed to AGEIA at 2004 & 1st appeared on Quantic Dreams special FAHRENHEIT...at 2008 AGEIA was itself acquired by graphics technology manufacturer Nvidia & renamed to Nvidia PhysX...Nvidia invented a new kind of PhysX tech called PPU(PhysX Processing Unit)which is a Unit like CPU or GPU...32CUDA cores makes a PPU which is enabled from 8800 GPU...
Now Nvidia has 3 kind of PhysX no 1.Normal engine 2.Software engine 3.Hardware PhysX...
Nvidia made all the complex coding for game developers...todays every game has physX in it some are normal created either by Nvidia or Havok or rarely some other,some are hardware accelerated which is only by Nvidia...
Many big companies like UBI,EA,2k,Capcom uses Nvidia PhysX tech...UBI's Prince of persia,Splinter Cell series has normal Nvidia PhysX...EA's NFS Prostreet Smoke effect is Nvidia's physX effect...these Normal physX doesn't require any additional hardware or software...EA's BulletStrom,Shift 2 & many other games has Software physX which requires PhysX software to be installed on PC that software utilize CPU as a physX unit with the help of OpenGL...Hardware physX is the most advanced tech in modern games which requires physX cores to be enabled...Mirrors Edge is the 1st of this Category...allmost all Gaming companies uses Nvidia PhysX(PC,PS3,Xbox360,Wii)game developers...
Now about another Physics creator giant Havok physX engine under intel(intel acquired Havok @ 2007)
Havok enables Physics by their engine only no software or Hardware needed...Havok's most successful output is Alan Wake...Skyrim, Deus EX Human rev, Warhammer space marine & console exclusives like Heavy rain(partially created by Nvidia),WWE series has the physX of Havok...
Last but not the least Erwin Coumans's Bullet Physics Lib was the physics tech owned by Sony Computer ent. which used in God of War...@ 2010 Erwin Coumans divided his Bullet PhysX lib into 2 engines...one for Game developing & another for movie...Yes today's only Movie physX engine is Bullet Physics powered by AMD...Bullet physX uses AMD's steam cores to create physX in movies...Megamind,Shrek series,A-Team,Hancock,300 etc all these movies have physics by AMD...now about gaming physics that side is fully optimized by Nvidia's CUDA...Games like RDR,upcoming,Uncharted series(partially created by Havok too)Physics created by Bullet lib...
