101: How to Raise voltage on a Socket 478 CPU

How to Raise voltage on a Socket 478 CPU

    pic_0366.jpg

You can only overclock a CPU as much as 600 – 800mhz on stock specifications until you run into a block, where you cant make it go any faster without allocating more power to it, meaning you have to raise the vCcore voltage. Now most motherboards don’t always let you change the volts…people who have HP / Dell etc branded computers have no access over the vCore at all.. But this mod to the cpu lets you raise the volt, regardless of your mobo.

I know this is something I should have posted a long long time ago, but I guess better late then never.. Many of you still have those older Pentium 4 or Celeron Socket 478 CPU based PC’s , they were great work horses, can make very good home servers / backup pc’s..

To Start off remove the CPU and locate the "dip " (the 2 missing pins) is on the bottom left. Now the first two pins on the second row from the top left side are the voltage pins we want to short. See the highlighted Pictured below..

    pic_0361.jpg

If you short the first two pins it should bring your VCore voltage up to 1.68 / 1.7 volts..

Stripe some copper wire, use one or two strands, its gotta be very fine and to make sure it doesn’t go around touching any other pins..

    pic_0355.jpg

    pic_0356.jpg

Now Follow the pictures below, it should give you an rough idea what it should look like when you are done..

    pic_0362.jpg

    pic_0394.jpg

    pic_0395.jpg

    pic_0374.jpg

    pic_0391.jpg

    vCore in Bios Before

    pic_0397.jpg

    vCore in Bios After

    pic_0404.jpg

Now, with a decent Motherboard, you should be able to overclock it to great levels, 4GHz or more shouldn’t be that hard to get without many block’s..However I wasn’t able to take the CPU upto that kinds of speeds as I found out the motherboard wouldn’t support anything beyond 3.2GHZ

    pic_0419.jpg

    pic_0413.jpg

Anyhow, this is something we’d do maybe 8-10 years ago, I am posting this assuming some of you still have a few old systems around the house that you may want to squeeze the most out of them. Overclocking can be dangerous, Even those of us who do it often, sometimes we too make mistakes..So do it at your own risk, But if you follow the guide accurately, do it right then you should be all right..

So what are you waiting for? Go overclock that old socket 478 to 4GHz and turn it into something useful

    So, Till next time...

    Cheers,
    Zaid H.

All Lies and Bull. Most of the people that say that are just too afraid and possess very little knowledge on the subject.. (then again overclocking can be a dangerous, (not as much as you think).. specially normal overclocks, It should be just fine.. Say you have a 1.8GHz CPU and your mobo supports 3Ghz, Take it up to that kind of speeds if you can, (would be a bit tricky depending on the processor)

Its like there is always a chance your plane will crash, but that wont stop you from flying will it.. As long as its done right and you keep monitor of your temps you will be fine, And if all goes blank, Just reset the settings to default ( remove the CMOS battery)

Here's something for you, should help removing the CPU, easy process..... http://forums.tomorrowsgaming.com/sh...7348#post37348

Download the softwares such as HW Monitor, CPU z, GPU Z.. and start overclocking a bit, you can do it all from the bios, no need to go nutty like me.. Simply Raise your FSB rate (and Multiplier when possible) ..do it little by little, log into windows and see CPU Z for the speed increase.. and let us know

Ha ha ha ha ha Sure no worries.. I'll see if I can find some old CPU's for you to practice on, then I could try send them along with the small acrylic plates, but dont hold me to my words..

Sure, I will help you along the way, you possibly can not cause any damage, You can do some little tickling right now..First thing is first, Download
CPUz, GPU Z , Real Temp.. Should be all you need to get you started.

Now, take a note of your current CPU Speed From CPUZ. Go from there , Restart your PC, Log into BIOS via F2 or Del etc.. Now its different on every motherboard, so do a bit or searching, Go into various chipset settings, on one such setting you will find something that mentions CPU Frequency / Clock and it might be set to default, lets call the default 100Mhz or so (depending on your system this might as well as vary)

Edit this value, put 105 and Save and start windows..Check your processor temp and speeds..its increased. Keep doing this same, little by little, untill your system just wont boot into windows.. Remember little by little, Lets say just go upto 10 for now.. if its 100 make it 110..but slowly..104 - then say go 105, then 108 then 110... and if it freezes then the computer will auto load the default value, if not just reset the bios and your done!

Take some Screenshots of the Bios too while your at it..(Use a Digital Camera)

    All the best

Thats great, Now first..get to know the softwares..Install them and carefully read and understand them, Your motherboards base chip is not a very good one out of the box, but you could still safely get another 200 - 400 MHz from it, No volt access needed.

Go into the Bios, Search for anything that says

Frequency or Volts, then just increase the FSB about 5..

post a few pictures of the bios screen.
